Weekend festivals celebrate Whatcom's fall harvests

Two weekend events to celebrate the fall harvest will kick off seasonal events:

• The Lynden Pumpkin Festival begins at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, and continues from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Fairway Shopping Center. The event is free and includes the Cascade Commodities Giant Hay Maze.

A children's hay hunt, courtesy of Bogaard Hay, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Kids also can decorate a pumpkin from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fairway Center, while supplies last.

• Cloud Mountain Farm Center's annual Fall Fruit Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, and offers more than 200 varieties of fruit and fruit products for visitors to taste. There's also live music, and Julia's Pumpkin Patch is open for U-pick and we-pick pumpkins throughout October.

UPCOMING EVENT

• The Ferndale Harvest Festival will be held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct 13, at Ferndale Centennial Riverwalk Park and marks the closing day of the Public Market. Events include pumpkin painting and contests for chalk and scarecrow drawing, dog costumes, ugly trucks and pumpkin baking.
